Check the celebration photo of any NHL team and you will see a bunch of grizzly mountain men--the result of the "playoff beard" adopted by so many superstitious hockey players--the most superstitious of all athletes. New England Patriots Wes Welker has started growing his own playoff facial adornments, and he is using the hair to not only for good luck and good karma, but also to benefit the kids of his native Oklahoma City.
As noted by Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald, Welker has a deal with sportiqe.com to sell t-shirts with his "Catching Passes and Growing Staches" catchphrase logo. A portion of all sales will be donated to the Wes Welker Foundation.
Welker's Foundation was organized in 2006 "to influence at-risk youth by encouraging their full potential through athletics and positive role models," To date, the foundation has made grants of over $200,000 to OKC schools and youth organizations for athletic equipment, training, fields, and uniforms. The foundation recently announced it's first grants of the new year, a total of $39,000 to four OKC schools. Proceeds from other Welker merchandise on his own store, also supports his foundation. You can also make a donation directly from the foundation's website.
By the way, notice that the foundation's WW logo looks like a mustache?
